Autism Treatment I almost don't even want to use the term "autism treatment", because really, it's treatment of children on the autism spectrum. As a naturopathic physician, I don't treat disease, I treat the person. I know that your child has a unique personality and unique physical symptoms. Yet there is a commonality of symptoms, behavioral traits, and even causes of disease that are shared by those on the autism spectrum. This is a good thing because it narrows down the number of tests we might order and treatments we would pursue. Many symptoms of autism are caused by upregulation and down regulation of genes associated with detoxification and energy production. This can be caused by heavy metals or a genetic predisposition to need higher amounts of certain nutrients that push mitochondrial pathways. Sensitivities to foods, people, things, and emotions can push a child way out of balance, never allowing them to achieve normal function. I am a certified DAN practitioner and I also use homeopathy and NAET (see allergy page for explanation) to eliminate blocks to cure. One of my favorite modalities to use with autistic kids is homeopathy. With homeopathy, we can treat symptoms and personality traits right away with ease. NAET helps eliminate blocks to cure such as bad reactions to or poor assimilation of nutrients. Supplements help immensely, and we can decide which ones are most important for your child. My treatment may include: -metabolic testing -heavy metal testing and detox -stool test -homeopathic medicine -dietary change -supplementation -antibiotic or anti-fungal prescriptions -vitamin B12 shots -IV therapy -NAET treatments (see allergy page) Remember, your child probably has a multiple issues that have combined to create the problems you are facing. The approach is step-wise, implementing certain treatments in the right order for the most benefit. I seek to stay up-to-date on the latest treatments through newsletters and seminars such as the DAN/Autism One conference last year.
